Environmental Literacy Framework with a Focus on Climate Change

ELF is comprised of materials that are intended to promote an extended conceptual framework for environmental literacy that covers the major Earth systems: atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere and biosphere. Each of these comprises an environmental literacy science unit; a fifth unit, Energy, provides unifying concepts that capture the dynamic nature of the Earth systems.

Background Information
The ELF provides a set of materials based on middle school standards and a model for incorporating them into existing curriculum.Teachers in grades 5-10 have successfully used these materials in their classrooms. The ELF combines climate change concepts drawn from the Essential Principles of Ocean Sciences, Climate Literacy: The Essential Principles of Climate Science, Earth Science Literacy Principles: The Big Ideas and Supporting Concepts of Earth Science, and Essential Principals and Fundamental Concepts for Atmospheric Science Literacy. The activities are written for a middle school audience, while the background information is written for the teacher.
This material is based on work supported by an Environmental Literacy Grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Education (NA0909SEC4690009) and prior work supported by the National Science Foundation under Grants ANT-0342484 and ESI-0632175.  Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in these materials are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of the NOAA or the NSF.
